The floriate cross, a design rarely seen on saucer brooches, is made prominent in pewter relief.
So-called for their flared rim, and worn in pairs at the shoulder to hold dresses up, saucer brooches were the most common form of brooch worn by Anglo-Saxon women. The Museum’s gilt bronze brooch which features the motif is early Anglo-Saxon, from 5th century Britain.
