Honour, ambition and betrayal play out in a world which, whilst reminiscent of the 15th century, is disconcertingly and often spectacularly different. George R. R. Martin’s sprawling opus A Song of Ice and Fire, better known to popular culture as Game of Thrones, pits the seven Great Houses controlling the land of Westeros against each other. An epic in every sense, its men are more than matched by a large cast of strong female characters, with magic and fire-breathing dragons into the bargain.
