An example of virtuoso 15th century artistry and craft, a lacquer box’s carving of a dragon writhing amongst clouds graces Freeman Lau’s versatile multi-tiered container.
Comprising three stacking dishes, two in satin finish pewter, one in bone china; topped with the spectacular dragon lid, the set serves as valet tray, bottle coaster, desk tidy, canapé dish or a multitude of other functions.
Based on a round lidded box with cloud and dragon decoration, carved cinnabar lacquer over wood; Ming dynasty, Xuande reign (1426-1435)
Freeman Lau, a founding partner of Hong Kong’s Kan and Lau Design Consultants, is a graphic designer and fine artist, a frequent speaker at international design forums, and the recipient of the HKSAR government’s Bronze Bauhinia Star in recognition of his contributions in enhancing the identity of Hong Kong design.
