Peninsular Malaysia’s idyllic northeast is a bastion of classic Malay cultural expression, with woodcarving amongst the most celebrated of its artforms. Elaborately carved panels, from the late 19th century royal residence of Istana Satu, provide the Classic Expressions collection with its motif.
Classic Expressions comes in one of three finishes; the brushed metal Satin, the mirror-like Royal, or Gilt, a bright polish accented with 24K gilded detail.
Constructed entirely from timber, the modestly-scaled Istana Satu was originally erected in the east coast state of Terengganu in 1884 in a compound that would later accommodate the Istana Maziah, palace of the Sultan of Terengganu. In 1974, the Istana Satu was relocated to the National Museum of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.
