The phoenix looms large in the psyche of China’s ancient cultural sphere. Symbolic of benevolence, honour and noble endeavour, the mythical bird also represents joy and harmony, appearing only when peace reigns in the land. Reverence for the phoenix is second only to that for the dragon.
Conceived by Liuli Living, an extension of Taiwan’s famed Liuligongfang art glass studio, in association with Royal Selangor, The Phoenix captures the bird’s iconic appearance in exuberant detail, melding the understated allure of pewter with the luminosity of glass.
Founded by renowned glass artists Loretta H. Yang and Chang Yi, Taiwan’s Liuligongfang grew from modest beginnings in 1987 to become Asia’s leading name in crystal art. Liuli, a Han dynasty term, refers to and acknowledges China’s rich heritage in glass art, and honours the mastery of the dynasty’s artisans of pâte de verre, a glass-casting technique now reintroduced.
