The Malay term peranakan, or locally born, dates to the 19th century, and refers to a community with a far older lineage, descendants of traders and visitors to the 15th century port of Malacca from imperial China and the Indian subcontinent. Although communities exist throughout Southeast Asia, the use and love of Peranakan porcelain or nonya ware is peculiar to those in the former Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore. Straits Expression is an affectionate contemporary interpretation of nonya ware, inspired in part by pieces in the collection of Royal Selangor’s founding family.
