Unlike their occidental brethren, oriental dragons are considered extremely auspicious, emblematic of strength, benevolence and the renewal of life, as they are seen as bringers of rain. Rendered in exquisite low relief sculpting, it takes pride of place on a modern planar concave interpretation of the globular porcelain original, with a hint of the original artefact’s scrolling lotus pattern on the reverse.
Based on a vase with lotus and dragon decoration in underglaze blue; Ming dynasty, Yongle reign (1403-1424)
