On the occasion of Malaysia’s 60th anniversary, Royal Selangor brings you Heritage, a celebration of Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity. The launch collection consists of 6 new coaster designs which are inspired by traditional arts and crafts across Malaysia, including those of the indigenous tribes from East Malaysia.
Whether purchased as a pair or as a set 6, the coasters make timeless gifts for both personal and professional settings.
Each coaster features a different heritage print crisply stamped on a bright pewter disc. The discs are set on a black food-safe eco-composite body. In line with Royal Selangor’s long-term sustainability efforts, sawdust from Royal Selangor’s woodworking facility is combined with resin to form this eco-composite material.
Discover the craft behind each coaster below:
Batik Coaster
Batik is an ancient art of dyeing textiles and decorating cloth using the wax-resist method. Although it can be found around the world, the batik from the Malay archipelago rank amongst the finest for pure artistic expression.
Songket Coaster
Songket, the pride of Malaysian weaving, iscloth decorated with gold or silver thread. It belongs to the brocade family of textiles and is considered the most exquisite and luxurious of traditional fabrics. Shimmering and opulent, it is worn almost exclusively on significant, momentous occasions.
Sabah Pinakol Coaster
Pinakol is a Rungus craft consisting a pair of belts or straps woven with seed beads. The Rungus people, who live in the northernmost district of Sabah, wear the Pinakol bandolier style across the chest and back. It continues to be a part of their daily dress.
Sarawak Aso Coaster
The remote riverine headlands of East Malaysia’s gigantic Sarawak state are home to the Kenyah people. The Kenyah people are renowned for their wildly distinctive visual expression; one of which includes the popular aso motif. The aso is a mythical half-dog half-dragon creature believed to ward off disease and malevolent influence.
Wayang Kulit Coaster
Wayang kulit is an art, in the form of shadow puppetry. It is popular in the bucolic northern states of the peninsula. The character featured is Seri Rama, a hero of the localised version of the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana.
Woodcarving Coaster
The distinctive spiral flourishes and flame-like leaves carved in an early
19th-century cengal panel from Kelantan display the influence of the legendary kingdom of Langkasuka which flourished in Southeast Asia from the second to the sixteenth centuries.
