Husaini Zulkifly
Senior Manager of Global Sales
A Gentleman and a Scholar
Husaini earned a scholarship from a Malaysian telecommunications company to study A Levels and engineering in the UK. In 2003, he joined Royal Selangor as an account executive, providing gifting solutions to large KL-based companies.
“When I first joined, I was very lucky to be trained by our Director then, the late Mrs MK Chen, whom we all called Datin Chen. She taught me how to talk effectively to customers, craft design proposals and manage customers’ expectations. Most importantly, I learnt how to balance Royal Selangor’s design capabilities with client needs. Her guidance propelled my professional development,” he says.
The more he learnt about bespoke design, the more he enjoyed it. His clients include ExxonMobile, Brunei Shell Petroleum as well as sporting events such as the Asian Games and the CIMB Classic, Southeast Asia's sole US PGA Tour-sanctioned golf tournament.
“Bespoke is about craftsmanship and creativity. It’s about marking a special moment with something rare and beautiful," he explains.
“When a bespoke order is successfully completed and delivered to a satisfied client, I feel elated. I love the moment when the client has that broad smile when he or she sees the actual piece which was previously in sketches. I get a sense of achievement when they let me know how much they appreciate my efforts. It motivates me to keep going,” he says.
“One of my most special bespoke projects was making Formula 1 trophies for Malaysia and Singapore. We worked hard to develop a beautiful perfectly-proportioned trophy that was easy to hold. When Bernie Ecclestone, the CEO of Formula 1 back then, complimented us on the trophy design, it was the proudest moment of my life,” he adds.
Today, Husaini is the Senior Manager of Global Sales. His work takes him around the world, to exotic locations in the Middle East and Indonesia, meeting up with Royal Selangor's distributors and bespoke clients.
“Our Middle Eastern distributors were impressed by the beautiful well-crafted products that they saw at our visitor centre. It gave them the confidence to not only distribute our products, but also to promote our bespoke service in their region,” says Husaini. His clientele includes big Middle Eastern brands such as Saudi Aramco and Qatar Museum Authority.
With sporting events gradually returning to the post-COVID world, Husaini and Royal Selangor look forward to providing thoughtfully designed trophies and awards to deserving winners.
