Royal Selangor releases a brand-new and captivating range of animal-inspired sculptures that immortalises Malaysian wildlife, synonymous with the Malaysian spirit.
Spotlighting endangered animals and the highly precarious situations that plague the species, Sculptura presents streamlined objects of unmistakable symbolism and presence, with emphasis on material, form and refinement, where esteem rightfully deserves centre stage.
Sculptura Gilt Malayan Tiger
The world’s largest big cat commands attention and respect. The Malayan tiger Panthera tigris tigris is an apex predator that holds an indelible place in the Malaysian spirit and contributes to local legend, awe and wonder. Sculptura’s homage takes the form of a supremely confident and powerful feline striding forward, its signature stripes inspired by the distinctive style of East Malaysia’s tattoo tradition.
In brilliant finish pewter with 24K gilding, on a walnut-stained rubberwood plinth. Includes an engraving plate for personalisation.
Sculptura Malayan Tiger Cub
An inquisitive juvenile Malayan tiger Panthera tigris tigris observes the world around it, in hopes for a better tomorrow.
The cub is a symbol of hope, resilience, and survival. Rendered in bright finish pewter, its distinctive stripes borrow from East Malaysia’s unique tattoo design tradition.
Sculptura Orangutan
Stately, dignified and authoritative, the orangutan Pongo pygmaeus also seems to have a twinkle in his eye and just a hint of a smile. Identified by their characteristic and prominent cheek flanges, orangutans belong to the world’s four genera of great apes.
It is the most arboreal of all great apes, with a diet consisting almost entirely of fruit. In brilliant finish pewter.
Sculptura Leatherback Sea Turtle
Attaining lengths of 1.8m and tipping the scales at 500kg, the leatherback sea turtle Dermochelys coriacea is the largest of all living species. It has changed little since prehistoric times and is easily identified by its prominently ridged back and streamlined shape. The turtle is an emblem of wisdom, enlightenment and steadfastness.
The beaches of Rantau Abang in Terengganu, on peninsular Malaysia’s east coast, once hosted the world’s largest nesting population of around 10,000 nests a year. Despite nesting having been effectively eradicated due to human consumption of eggs, a handful of these magnificent animals still return to the beach to lay.
Our sculpture of the proud giant gliding effortlessly through the oceans is in brilliant polish pewter.
Sculptura Malayan Tapir
The Malayan tapir Tapirus indicus is the only one found in Asia and is the largest of the world’s four tapir species; the remaining three being Central and South American residents.
Our palm-sized sculpture’s bright polish saddle pops against an ink-black body, mimicking the animal’s distinctive colouring, effectively camouflaging the nocturnal tapir under the moonlight. In brilliant finish pewter and composite resin.
Sculptura is available at Royal Selangor stores, authorised dealers, and online at royalselangor.com from 11 August 2023 onwards. To learn more about our new collection launches, follow our Instagram @royalselangor and Facebook page.
